Natural Anti-Flea Collar for Dogs — Does It Work?

Updated June 2025 · 6 min read

Why choose a natural anti-flea collar?

Chemical anti-flea collars (Seresto, Scalibor...) contain powerful insecticides such as imidacloprid or deltamethrin. While their effectiveness is proven, some owners worry about long-term effects — especially with young children or sensitive dogs in the household.

Natural collars use repellent essential oils (geraniol, lavender, citronella, eucalyptus) that repel fleas and ticks without chemically killing them.

Effectiveness: natural vs chemical

🔬 Good to know: Natural collars are repellents (they keep parasites away) while chemical collars are insecticides (they kill parasites). In case of an active infestation, chemical treatment will be more effective. For prevention, natural is often enough.

How does our Collier-Protect collar work?

Our anti-flea collar continuously releases plant-based active ingredients that create an invisible barrier around your dog. Fleas and ticks perceive these scents as a warning sign and avoid getting close.

Is it effective against ticks?

Yes. Ticks hate repellent essential oils. Our formula based on geraniol and plant oils is particularly effective against the common ticks (Ixodes ricinus) found in Belgium.

When should you start treatment?

Flea and tick season runs from April to November in Belgium. Ideally, fit the collar from March to get ahead of the season. Protection is active within 48 hours of fitting.

Suitable for puppies?

Our collar is suitable for puppies from 7 weeks old. This is a major advantage over chemical collars, which are often not recommended before 7-8 weeks.

Tips to maximise effectiveness

  1. Fit the collar directly against the skin (under the fur)
  2. Check your dog regularly after walks in wooded areas
  3. Also treat your home with a spray if there's an infestation
  4. Replace the collar every 24 months

Is the natural collar suitable for all dogs?

The natural collar suits the vast majority of dogs, including breeds with sensitive skin, since it contains no synthetic pesticides. However, it's still recommended to keep an eye on your dog during the first 24 hours after fitting, as with any new accessory worn against the skin, to check for any unusual reaction.

Natural or chemical: our recommendation depending on the situation

Frequently asked questions

Does the natural collar have a strong smell for humans?

The scent of the essential oils is noticeable during the first few days but stays light and fades quickly, without disrupting daily life with your dog.

Can the collar be trimmed if it's too long?

Yes, the collar is adjustable and the excess can be trimmed after fitting, leaving 2 to 3 cm of margin to allow for future readjustment if needed.

Does the collar also work in winter?

Ticks and fleas are mostly active from April to November in Belgium, but some mild winters allow them to survive. Keeping the collar on all year round remains the safest option.
